The monument is located near the Oude Kerk on Keizerstraat, the historic heart of Scheveningen. It honors and commemorates the citizens and resistance fighters from Scheveningen who lost their lives between 1940 and 1945. These may be people who died in bombings, in concentration camps, or who died as a result of resistance activities against the German occupiers.
The war memorial at the Oude Kerk in Scheveningen bears the following inscription:
FOR THOSE WHO FELL 1940 - 1945
This sober text honors the residents of Scheveningen who died during the Second World War. The monument, entitled "Monument for those who fell", is a bronze statue of two human figures, placed on a column. The statue symbolizes two people in a boat who are sunk by waves in the shape of a hand - God's hand - but can also be brought to safety. This symbolism expresses the uncertainty that prevailed during the war years, in a way that speaks to fishermen.
The monument is located on the lawn around the Oude Kerk on Keizerstraat in Scheveningen. It was unveiled on 28 October 1961 and has been a central location for commemorations ever since, especially on 4 May during the National Remembrance Day.
Scheveningen was hit hard during the war, including the construction of the Atlantic Wall, which forced many people to leave their homes. In addition, the nearby prison, the Oranjehotel (in the current Scheveningen prison), became a notorious place where many resistance fighters were imprisoned and executed.
The monument is a place of silence and remembrance, especially on 4 May (Remembrance Day), when flowers are laid and the sacrifices made for freedom are remembered.
