These Stolpersteine are here for Jewish war victims, persecuted, deported and murdered in World War II. From 1934, this address was the home of Leendert Halberstadt and his wife Vrouwtje Roet. This boarding house, effectively a rest home, housed around 30 elderly Jewish ladies. On 17 December 1942, Leendert Halberstadt was arrested for an “economic offence” and died in the Havenstraat prison on 20 January 1943. On 25 January that year, the rest home was completely evacuated and the residents were deported via Westerbork to the death camps where they all died. Mrs Halberstadt and the staff members Rijntje Stibbe, Sophie and Rebecca Wolff initially stayed behind. They were rounded up a few months later and also perished in the camps.

The history of Leendert Halberstadt and the rest home can be read at - https://www.joodsmonument.nl/en/page/46441/nursing-home-halberstadt

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of a known residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the victim’s, date of birth, and fate. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”

nb. A stone for Betje van Praag-Groenstad had been placed here before 2025.
