De Nieuwe Kerk

The Nieuwe Kerk has hosted the inaugurations of Dutch monarchs since 1814. The church was also used for the burial of around 10,000 people, including (fallen) Dutch soldiers such as Admiral de Ruyter and Rear Admiral Baron Bentinck.

During the shelling on the 7 May 1945, the church was used by fleeing people as a shelter. After the massacre, the church was used for victim identification.

Commemorative windows:
Inside the church is a memorial window commemorating the victims who died during the occupation due to acts of war. The memorial window also commemorates the liberation of the Netherlands and the former Dutch East Indies from German and Japanese occupation.

In 1995, a second memorial window was unveiled to commemorate the victims of World War II and 50 years of freedom. This modern window with abstract shapes was designed by Toon Verhoef and unveiled by Queen Beatrix on 4 May.
