Memorial Anton de Kom Nieuwe Kerk

This memorial stone on the floor of the Nieuwe Kerk commemorates the Surinamese resistance fighter, freedom fighter and writer Anton de Kom. He was active within the communist resistance, writing articles in the magazines ‘De Vonk’ and the ‘Revolutionair Socialistische Blad’. On 7 August 1944, he was arrested by the Germans and deported to Sachenhausen via Camp Vught. From this camp, he ended up in Sandbostel (Neuengamme outer camp) where he died of tuberculosis on 24 April 1945.

The stone unveiled in 2022 by De Kom's then 92-year-old daughter is in the literary pantheon of De Nieuwe Kerk, where numerous well-known writers are buried or commemorated. Anton de Kom fits in here because of his famous work, We slaves of Suriname from 1934. This book was a fierce indictment of racism, exploitation and colonial rule.
