The Willem III-sluis was built around 1864 next to the Willem I-sluis in Amsterdam to handle increased canal traffic. It featured mid-chamber gates for efficient passage of smaller vessels. Though no longer in use, it marked a key upgrade in Dutch lock design and led to the renovation of the older Willem I-sluis.
The northern exit of the Willem III lock was filled in after World War II to make way for the IJ tunnel. The southern part is now a harbour for houseboats.
The Willem III lock has practically disappeared and is now part of the Sixhaven.
