IJ-Paviljoen / Groot Laboratorium

The former Groot Laboratorium (Great Laboratory), built in 1929 to a design by Shell architect Kees Abspoel, is the only remaining Shell building in Overhoeks. In 1939, the L-shaped complex was expanded to five floors, connected by two monumental stairwells. The robust character of concrete and brick defines its appearance.

The stairwells feature stained-glass windows, some designed by Max Nauta. One window, dating from 1947, commemorates fallen employees of the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij: a phoenix rises from the flames with the inscription "You are called to freedom."

The complex was used by the Wehrmacht District Administration during World War II.
