he B-24H-1 41-28615 T 733 ‘Ginnie’ OD (733rd Bomber Squadron) was shot down by German FW 190 fighters on 22 February 1944, during a mission to Gotha after it had strayed from formation. The aircraft, carrying its full bomb load, exploded when it crashed near Steenbergen in the Volkerak. All 10 crew members were killed.
The fatal mission of the ‘Ginnie’ took place during the so-called ‘Big Week’. During this week, the USAAF and the RAF carried out massive air raids targeting German aircraft production and the Luftwaffe. The ‘Big Week’ is generally considered a success, but the losses of the Allied air forces were also enormous. The USAAF alone lost more than 200 bombers and approximately 2,600 crew members that week.
