The L480 bunker is marked on German maps as an “Unterstand für Wassermann S”. This meant that a large Wassermann Schwer radar was installed on top of the bunker. Inside the bunker itself were various rooms that served as an engine room, space for a generator, fuel storage and a few other support functions.
The bunker now serves as a lookout point and is not open to visitors. It is located on the grounds of the ‘Marine Flakbatterie Terschelling-West’, but was probably more closely associated with the adjacent Tiger emplacement.
Widerstandsnest 9 M was part of the Stützpunkgruppe Terschelling and consisted of four heavy anti aircraft guns (Flak-stellung FL 243a) and other bunkers like Tobruks. The battery was used by the German Navy.
Terschelling was strategically important for the Germans. Allied bombers flew over the northern isles of The Netherlands to bomb Nazi-Germany. The Germans tried to shoot as much as possible Allied planes. For that reason anti aircraft artillery (Flak) were build and also Freya and Wassermann anti aircraft radar.
