Stumbling Stones Hoogstraat

These memorial stones (so called Stolpersteine) are located near the crossing of the Hoogstraat and the Kerkstraat. These stones were placed on 6 April 2010, together with other stones in Tilburg and Roosendaal. They commemorate Joseph, Elisabeth Johanna and Johanna Sientje de Vries, who were murdered in Sobibor on 16 April 1943.

The small copper plaques, in the pavement in front of houses of which the (mostly Jewish) resisidents are murdered, mention the name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death.

In many other German cities the memorials also can be found. There are already many thousands of these plaques and their number is still counting. Almost all Stolpersteine are laid by the German artist himself, Gunter Demnig.
