Memorials Royal Engineers

This memorial within the Rochester Cathedral commemorates the soldiers of the Royal Engineers who gave their lives in the First Boer War and in Afghanistan, from 1878 to 1881.

officers N.C. Officers and men of
The Royal Engineers
The Bengal Engineers and The
Bengal, Madras and Bombay Sappers and Miners
who died for Queen and Country, some in
Afghanistan during the campaigns of 1838-1842
and of 1887-90. One in the Waziri Expedition
of 1881 and others in South Africa in the
Kaffir, Zulu and Transvaal Campaigns of 1878-8.
The above window is dedicated by
the Corps of Royal Engineers.
The names of those commemorated
are inscribed on either side of the doorway"

The Upper left panels contain the names of those who died in South Africa 1878-81
The upper right panels contain the names of those who died in Afghanistan 1878-80

The lower panels, left and right commemorate those who died in the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns 1808-15.
"The upper tier of the above lights was filled with stained glass in 1888 by the Corps of Royal Engineers to the Glory of God and in memory of the Officers of the Corps of Royal Engineers who served in the Peninsular and Waterloo Campaigns1808 to 1815. Their names are inscribed in the mosaic panels of the lower tier of wall-arcading on either side of the Great West Door"
