Crash Site Avro Lancaster Mk III ED937

In the night of 16/17 May 1943 Avro Lancaster ED937 of RAF 617 Squadron attacked the Ederdam as part of Operation Chastise. Pilot Maudslay made three determined attempts to breach the Eder Dam. His final attempt, at 01:45, saw his Upkeep mine released too late, causing it to hit the dam's parapet without bouncing and explode on impact—potentially damaging his aircraft. The damaged plane was guided towards the Dutch border when it was hit by Flak fire and crashed here at 0236 hrs.

None of the crew members survived. All were buried on the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.
