Jewish Monument De Beetse Internment Camp

In 1935, the camp "de Beetse" became a building for employed unemployed workers. The camp consisted of 16 barracks.

In January 1942 the camp was populated by 400 Jewish men from Amsterdam. They had to work as agricultural workers for the farmers in the area. In October 1942 the camp was surrounded by German soldiers and all men were taken away. They had to walk to the station in Stadskanaal and from there it went by train to Westerbork.

In 1948 the camp was closed and all but one barracks demolished. The barrack is currently in a very poor condition. On the advice of the Herinneringscentrum in Westerbork, the municipality of Vlagtwedde will commission a study to see which of the walls is so authentic that it must be preserved.

The old barrack has since been replaced.
