Lock Of The Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie Nieuwegein

Lock of the New Dutch Waterline.

During the expansion of the Beatrix lock at Nieuwegein, a number of objects of the New Dutch Waterline were in the way. Casemates have been moved along with a lock and a diver's head, all part of the New Dutch Waterline.

Due to the widening of the Lek Canal and the construction of the third gully in the Princess Beatrix lock, the monumental objects had to be moved.

The Waterline consists of 50 fortresses, 6 fortified cities and more than 1000 military and hydraulic engineering objects. A system aimed at quickly flooding large areas to stop the enemy. The buildings and the landscape of the lines together form the largest national monument in the Netherlands.
