War Memorial Via Dolorosa Aalst

The Battle of Aalst was a battle that took place on September 26 and 27, 1914.
On September 27, 1914, fierce fighting took place to capture the city of Aalst. German troops marched into Aalst to capture the Zwarte Hoek Bridge, but they collided with Belgian defenders here. Because that attack failed, revenge was taken against the civilian population: To cool their panic and anger, German soldiers took innocent people out of their homes and used them as a living shield. Houses were set on fire, approximately 35 people were murdered.

At the Zwarte Hoek Bridge, on the right bank of the Dender, there is now a war memorial in honor of the fallen soldiers and civilians in the First World War.
The war memorial "Via Dolorosa" - The Battle of Alost - consisting of pressed materials from the First World War was inaugurated in 2014 to never forget the horror of 100 years ago.
Gemmenich refers to the municipality where the Germans invaded Belgium.
