Memorial Civilian Casualties Exloo

This memorial is situated in the town hall of the municipality of Borger-Odoorn. This wall sculpture is made of limestone and symbolises a phoenix.

In June 1943, a group of members of the resistance set the town hall of Exloo deliberately on fire. Their purpose was to destroy the register of population, including the information about Jewish citizens. The town hall and the archive did burn to the ground; however the register was stored in a safe and stayed intact.

De resistance fighters were executed for this assault. Other civilians were executed as well as a reprisal. To commemorate them, this memorial was erected.
