Bunker I Lanaye

Bank bunker I (capital i) on the Albert Canal south of the village of Lanaye.

This bunker belongs to the Albert Canal defense line and specifically falls under the so-called 'Enclave de Maastricht'. This enclave was so named because, unlike where it enters the country at Maastricht, the Meuse at Eijsden does not form the border above Maastricht. The area west of Maastricht and the defense of the canals and the Maas from the village of Neerharen to the village of Kanne form the Enclave Maastricht.

Within this enclave were several bunkers of which today 7 remain. The bunkers I, bunker F, bunker L1 , bunker L2 , bunker built in the sluice of Lanaye , bunker O and bunker M.

There is a loophole in both directions. Because the water side of the bunker is extended a bit further, it seems to offer protection to the embrasure compared to the opposite side.
