Memorials Zuidkapel Veurne

During the First World War, the South Chapel was used as an emergency church for the Sint-Niklaas parish because it was not safe in the Center due to the heavy German artillery.
In the chapel there is a memorial text that commemorates this period.

Text:

The Zuidkapelleke during the war 1914-1918

In the beginning of 1915, because the city was unsafe because of the bombs, the Zuidkapelleke was opened to the parish service of St. Niklaas. It was surrounded by barracks serving as schools. Since 't Kapelleke was too small, divine services were later performed in a wooden temporary chapel while the Zuidkapelleke was fortified as a shelter from the bombs.
On Sundays, the H.M. was attended for a long time by several of the army chiefs, many officers and some 100 soldiers.
The Sacraments were administered there: the solemn Communion was made and, in 1916, Confirmation administered by Mgr. De Brouwer, Apostolic Delegate
The minister visited the schools; H.M. the King also passed by and was cheered by the children.
In 1917 the barracks were temporarily occupied by refugees and Her Majesty Kings Elisabeth visited them.
In 1917 the Zuidkapelleke was temporarily restored.
In 1923, thanks to the generous funds of devout Veurnaars, the restoration and decoration was completed.
Our Lady of 't Zuidkapelleke protects Veurne.
