St. 117a. Regiments- oder Bataillonsgefechtsstand Haamstede

In the Slotbos near Haamstede is clearly visible from the Moolweg a large command bunker of the type St. 117a. (Regimental oder Batavian battle stand)

For most of the war a troop of battalion strength, belonging to the 743rd regiment of the 719th infantry division, was stationed on Schouwen-Duiveland. Until October 21, 1942, the second battalion of this division was responsible for the defense of the island, after which the first battalion took over these duties.

The bunker was part of Widerstandsnest 325 H, a position of more than 20 bunkers, including crew bunkers and ammunition bunkers. Due to its shape and size, this command bunker is nicknamed "the whale". Another common term is "wing bunker".
