Sanatorium Zuydcoote Military Hospital

The Vancauwenberghe sanatorium is located near the sea in Zuydcoote. During the First World War, it served as a military hospital and more than 100,000 wounded soldiers were received and cared for.

In the early days of the Second World War it was used again as a military hospital. During Operation Dynamo, hundreds of wounded were brought in, while under constant threat of German artillery. After the Liberation, it was largely destroyed. It was rebuilt in the years after the war and today it serves as a maritime hospital.
