Memorials Civilian Victims Wester Cemetery

Civilian victims were interred on this square of the Wester cemetery. Both people who were killed in Allied bombings and people who were shot by the Germans for espionage found a final resting place here.

Half a century after the end of World War I, the field was decayed and abandoned because the graves were no longer maintained by the relatives. Funerary monuments were scraped and crooked or broken.

The City of Ghent decided to replace the tombs with a small memorial column surrounded by text panels bearing the names of the people buried here.

Close to the British Commonwealth graves, the city of Ghent decided to erect a memorial column for the civilian victims of the Second World War. The names of the victims are mentioned next to "1940-1945".
