Belgian War Grave Kortrijk

Kortrijk Municipal Cemetery contains a unique grave monument of Edouard Wallays who died on September 6, 1914.

Inscription is in French:
"Peace here
Edouard WALLAYS
Born in Kortrijk on November 13, 1893
Died for the fatherland on September 6, 1914
R.I.P. "

On the headstone a soldier's helmet on a laurel branch and flag.

Edouard Wallays was seriously injured at the beginning of the First World War in Kapelle-op-den-Bos in Flemish Brabant and died in a hospital in Antwerp.
After the war, his body was interred at the Sint-Jan cemetery in the Meensesteenweg. More than 200 Kortrijk soldiers died during WWI. Edouard Wallays was the only one to have his own grave.
