Barrack Camp Havelthe Airport

The barracks camp near De Doeze along the Hunebeddenweg, north of Havelte, was the first camp where mixed-married Jewish men were housed. Since 1943, penal prisoners had also been housed in this barracks camp. The Jews were housed separately from the penal inmates and had their own Jewish camp commander. This camp became too crowded and too dangerous because of the Allied bombing raids on the airfield. Therefore, on 25 May 1944, the approximately 500 Jewish men were moved to the camp at the Konijnenbergen, on the east side of Havelte.
