War Memorial Obergartzem

A war memorial was inaugurated on September 2, 1934 on today's Bonner Strasse in Obergartzem. Since many party leaders had been invited, the inauguration was to take place at a later date. The monument, a brick block made of quarry stone, stood on a three-tiered base in 1934 in the open area. An iron cross carved in stone served as a crowning point. In the front of the block a metal plate with the fallen soldiers of the First World War, on the left edge a Christian cross and above the names a dedication.
After the Second World War, in the years 1956-57, the monument was built over with the Marienkapelle. Instead of the Iron Cross there is now a statue of the Virgin Mary, a copy of the "Mother of the Poor". It came in 1957 from the Belgian pilgrimage site of Banneux. On the front of the block or altar, in addition to the plate from 1934, two other metal plates for the fallen of World War II were attached. On both panels the repeated inscriptions: "Victims of the war 1919-1945". As a replacement for the iron cross on the memorial, an iron cross was placed above the entrance to the chapel in the gable.
