Memorial "Shadows"

On Monday, June 20, 2022, the work of art "Shadows" was unveiled on Olympiaplein in memory of the large raid on June 20, 1943. During the large raid on Olympiaplein and 2 other locations, 5,542 Jews were arrested. The names of the people in the photo are unknown. The shadows of these people are now immortalized in asphalt in the square.

Shadows was designed by artist Ram Katzir, together with students Anne Kleijn, Laura Borgstein and Zara Hoeffelman from Het Amsterdams Lyceum. The initiator is Job van Amerongen. The students took the photos to Olympiaplein to find out exactly where the people in the photo walked. The idea that the people in the photo weren't really allowed to be there, while everyone can now walk around in the same place in freedom, made a big impression on the students. Events leave imprints and so the idea was born to display the shadows of the people on the ground as a memorial.
