Fort bij Vechten - Reduit

Fort bij Vechten was built in the period between 1867 and 1870 as part of the New Dutch Waterline. The fort's task was to prevent artillery attacks on the city of Utrecht and the defenses behind the fort.

Fort bij Vechten has a "reduit" (a fortress within a fortress), an independent fortress within the Fort bij Vechten, in which the troops could withdraw if the fortress was taken by the enemy. This reduit is a pentagonal fortress that can be defended independently, originally surrounded by a moat and equipped with cannons. There are 37 rooms on the ground floor, each with three loopholes. There were stocks for a short period.
