During the night of 3 to 4 February 1943, the Avro Lancaster W4256 crashed near Hipolytushoef, on the former island of Wieringen in North Holland. The crew was returning from a bombing mission over Hamburg, Germany. During that mission, many aircraft were attacked by German anti-aircraft guns and night fighters. The W4256 was also hit — probably by a German night fighter — and crashed shortly afterwards.
All seven crew members were killed in the crash. They were later buried in the general cemetery in Middenmeer.
