Fort George

Planned during the Anglo-French War (1778-83) work on Fort George was started in 1780 and completed in 1812. It was built to house extra troops to deal with the threat of the anticipated French invasion. It mounted 34 cannons, one carronade and four mortars.
The 1st battalion, Royal Guernsey Light Infantry trained at the Fort before leaving for the Western Front on 1 June 1917. The 2nd battalion remained at the Fort as a training battalion.
The Germans turned it into Stutzpunkt Georgefest during WW2 and also installed a radar early warning station with 2 Freya and 2 Wurburg-Reise radar units. Unsuccessful attempts were made by the Allies to bomb the radar installations on 2 and 5 th June 1944, prior to the D-Day landings.
The Fort was decommissioned after the war and eventually sold off for luxury housing development. Only the main gate survives
