Secret Underground telephonebooth 'V' Embourg

This is underground cell V.

If one did not know better, you might think that this is an ordanary sewer cover. And only by accident the lit is part of the monument of fort Embourg.

But this is not a sewer cover, It's an underground telephonebooth. Around 200 were installed in the thirties. In one of these underground cells, a soldier could plug in a field telephone and got connected with one of 34 telephone exchange centers (Centraux telefonique). These CTF's could put one trhough to one of te bunkers ore fort in the lines of defence for the city of Liège, la Position Fortifiée de Liège, PFL).

The monument was build upon the telefoonbooth ! This gives a good impression of the sizes of these telephonebooths. The cell is about 1,80 / 2.20 m. deep. The soldier could climb in ore out the cell with in the wall atached brackets.

In regular these covers bore the name of producer Elkington. In this case the original cover was replaced with a cover of concrete. The covers were numbered with 1509. Only with a special tool the cover could be removed.
