Monument to Political Prisoners Mechelen

The Monument to the Political Prisoners was erected and inaugurated in May 1971, for the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps

The memorial consists of several parts: a concrete memorial column with a red triangle and sculpture and next to it a brick wall with a memorial plaque in bluestone.
It was artist Lode Eyckermans who made a meaningful sculpture for the Mechelen memorial in 1971 that represents the hands of the prisoners going up in flames in the crematoria of the concentration camps.
The red triangle refers to the mark that the prisoners had to wear on their clothing. It symbolized political prisoners. The letter B indicated nationality.
