Belgian War Graves Retinne

In the cemetery near the church of Sainte Julienne in Retinne, there is a mass grave of Belgian soldiers who fell on August 5 and 6, 1914, while defending the village of Retinne. The grave was cleared after the war and the soldiers were reburied. The gravestone remained in place after the war as a timeless reminder, in all its simplicity and respect for the fallen.

The names of 19 identified and 4 unidentified Belgian soldiers are inscribed on the stone.

Most of the soldiers were from the 12th and 14th line regiments.

FLAMION Edouard, 25 years old, from Izel, sergeant major in the 12th line regiment, killed in action at Retinne on the second day of the First World War, August 5, 1914, at Retinne, reburied after the war in 1914 at the municipal cemetery of Izem.

BOUSTEN Peter, 21 years old, from Peer, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action at Retinne on August 6, 1914, reburied after the war in 1924 at the military cemetery in Rabosée.

DIRICKX Ludovicus, soldier, 24 years old, from Hakendover, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action at Retinne on August 6, 1914, missing since then.

NOCKIN Thomas, 25 years old, from Nessonvaux, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action at Retinne on August 6, 1914, unknown where he was reburied after the war.

OLBREGTS Alphonse, 28 years old, from Laken, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action three days after his 28th birthday on August 6, 1914, in Retinne.


PETERS Mathieu, 21 years old, from Bassenge, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied in Bassenge after the war.

ROSS Alfred, 20 years old, from Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied after the war in 1924 at the military cemetery in Rabosée.

VAN DEN EYNDE Jean, 21 years old, from Brussels, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied in Brussels after the war.

VANDENBOGAERDE Emiel, 28 years old, from Saint-Gilles, soldier* in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied after the war in 1924 at the Rabosée military cemetery.

WILLEMS Mauritius, 27 years old, from Antwerp, soldier in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied after the war in 1924 at the Rabosée military cemetery.

ZOMMERS (ZOOMERS) Joseph, 20 years old, from Liège, corporal in the 12th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied after the war in 1924 at the Rabosée military cemetery.


14th Line Regiment

LAVAUX Richard, 21 years old, from Liège, corporal in the 14th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, reburied after the war in the military cemetery of Rabosée.

LIZEN Louis, 29 years old, from Villers-le-Bouillet, soldier in the 14th Line Regiment, killed in action on August 6, 1914, in Retinne, missing since then.

VERJANS Laurentius, 22 years old, from Liège, soldier in the 14th Line Regiment, reburied after the war in the military cemetery of Rabosée.

10th Line Regiment

VAN LENGENHAEGE Aloysius, 21 years old, from Wijnegem, soldier in the 10th Line Regiment, killed in action in Retinne on August 6, 1914, reburied after the war in the municipal cemetery of Wijnegem.

MARCHAL Hadelin, 20 years old, from Les Waleffes, sergeant in the artillery, 75 mm rapid-fire guns, reburied after the war in the municipal cemetery of Les Waleffes.

5th artillery regiment

DEDOBELLEER Petrus, 26 years old, from Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, sergeant in the 3rd army, 5th artillery regiment, killed in action at Retinne on August 23, 1914, reburied after the war at the military cemetery in Rabosée.


The Rabosée military cemetery is located in Wandre. Photos 3-5 were taken at this cemetery, which is about 7 km from the Retinne cemetery.

It is striking that several names have been recorded with an incorrect rank or name. It is assumed that the correct details were recorded during the exhumation and reburial and that at the time of the first burial
