Former Staff Quarter 1-17 R.A.

This is the former staff quarters of I-17 R.A. (1st Division of the 17th Regiment Artillery) at Rijksstraatweg 131 in Dordrecht in May 1940.

The Public School and adjoining house were defended on the morning of 10 May 1940 by Captain J.S. Baretta and staff troops of 1-I-17 R.A. and 2-I-17 R.A. It was a short battle. German paratroopers advanced rapidly towards the school and the adjacent house where the Dutch artillery troops had holed up. When a hand grenade was thrown into the house and the ammunition on the Dutch side was rapidly running out, the captain decided to surrender with his men.
