Memorial "Weapon Container in the Bog"

Near the Warrebrêge (Warrebrug) stands a monument commemorating the weapons drop that took place here on 5 January 1945. The monument consists of a concrete block with two submachine guns and a weapons container protruding from it.

On 5 January 1945, a Halifax Mk.V bomber, belonging to No. 297 Squadron RAF, dropped fourteen weapon containers and three packages on the Wardrobe drop zone in De Deelen between Tijnje and Aldeboarn. One container remained attached to the aircraft. Because the coordinates provided were incorrect, the resistance group led by Douwe Algra, a teacher in Tijnje, had already waited three times in vain for a weapons drop. The twenty resistance fighters managed to recover the weapons and distribute them throughout Friesland.

The monument was unveiled on 5 May 2024 by some of Douwe Algra's relatives and is called “Wapencontainers in het Veen” (Weapons Containers in the Peat).
