After their arrival in April 1944, Adolf Eichmann and his 150-man Eichmann Kommando stayed at this luxurious and historic hotel for several days.
Eichmann came to Budapest with orders to organise the deportation of Hungarian Jews. As part of this so-called “Operation Höss”, over 437,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz between April and July 1944. On 8 July, the transports were halted by Hungary's head of state Miklós Horthy. In October 1944, Horthy's role was over and he was replaced by the facist Ferenc Szalasi after which the deportations and massacres continued again. In the end, some 568,0000 Hungarian Jews were killed.
As mentioned, they only stayed for a short time. Eichmann left for a confiscated villa and until the end of their stay, the Eichmann-Kommando moved into the Majestic Hotel on Sváb Hill.
