Memorial Boer Prisoners

During the Second Boer War, 1899.1902, many Boer fighters and their families fled to the Portuguese colony of Mozambique to escape the British Forces. They were interred and transferred to Portugal where 14 of them died. In 1913, the South African Government erected a monument to honour them. Only one of the 14 is buried in the cemetery, Johannes Christoffel Nel is interred beneath the monument. The monument with inscriptions in Afrikaans and English was unveiled by the Governor General of South Africa, Viscount Gladstone, and the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Louis Botha.
