The monument, unveiled in 1901, commemorates those Tasmanians who served and died in the Second Boer War in South Africa, 1899-1902. Some 860 serviceman and 800 horses were transported to South Africa, 39 men paid the ultimate sacrifice and most of the horses were left behind.
