Princess Royal Fortress is one of only two forts built before federation to protect intercontinental trade routes.
At the time, all Australian colonies on the mainland contributed to the costs, which was a rare example of cooperation between the colonies before federation.
According to the National Anzac Centre, the convoys that departed from King George Sound chose Albany as their gathering place because of the fort's defences and the protection it could offer the fleet. Without Princess Royal Fortress, the convoys would never have gathered in such numbers in one place.
Wander around the fort grounds and experience what it was like to protect the coasts of Australia in times of war. The grounds feature original gun batteries, large coastal defences and the barracks where officers lived and worked. Examples of weapon systems used on Australian Warships from the Second World War onwards.
