This memorial was erected in honour of the Fourth Canadian and First Polish Armoured Divisions that liberated Zelzate between 15 and 18 September 1944. Below the two plaques mounted on corten steel, the text reads:
'Zelzate pays tribute to its Canadian and Polish Liberators and the United Resistance'
'Non Omnis Moriar'
(Van Dale: I shall not wholly die, i.e. in my works I shall live on (Horat., Carm. 3,30,6).
Four Canadian soldiers died in the fighting. Their names are remembered on a plaque placed next to the monument:
'In loving memory, Killed at De Katte during the liberation of Zelzate'.
