Monument for Camille de Menten de Horne

On this spot the 1st Belgian officer fell during the 1st World War on August 5, 1914 around noon.

THE MENTEN DE HORNE Camille, age 43, Baron, from Liège, Captain-Commander in the 4th Squadron of the 2nd Lanciers Regiment, killed on August 5, 1914 at Plaineveaux.

The monument was unveiled on August 2, 1936, in memory of the brave attack carried out by Baron De Menten de Horne on the vanguard of the 38th brigade of the German army. A troop of Uhlans of 500 men. Against his better judgment and mindful of what he learned at officer training “lataque a l'outance” attack to the hilt, he attacked the vanguard with his 100 horsemen and 25 wheelers. The 4th squadron was “pummeled” and Captain De Mensen de Horne, as 1st Belgian officer, during the 1st worldwar lost his life in the attempt.
