The Palace Gardens in The Hague contain a remarkable shelter dating back to World War II. This underground space, located behind the guest wing of Noordeinde Palace and near the Royal Archives, served as a shelter for the royal family during the war.
In addition to this royal shelter, there was also a public shelter in the Palace Gardens, intended for civilians. This public shelter provided shelter for approximately 100 people seeking protection during bombings.
Nowadays, most of the shelters in The Hague are no longer in use or inaccessible. Many entrances have been removed or the spaces have been repurposed, for example as bicycle sheds or storage rooms. Nevertheless, the shelter in the Palace Gardens remains an intriguing part of The Hague's wartime history and royal heritage.
