Memorial Battle For The Bridge

On September 18, 2024, exactly 80 years after the fighting at the bridge, an additional plaque was unveiled in memory of six American soldiers who lost their lives there during the liberation of Heumen. They are:

Lawrence Blazina, 22 years old, M
Fred Grainger, 26 years old, M
Onie Burnett, 30 years old
Jerry Murphy, 23 years old, M
Donald Forein, 21 years old, M
Edward Schutt, 20 years old, M

These soldiers were temporarily buried at the cemetery in Molenhoek after their death. Five of them were later reburied at the American cemetery in Margraten. Only Onie Burnett was reburied in his home state of Kentucky, in the United States.

The monument in Heumen is a silent but telling witness to the sacrifices made for freedom in this region. Together with the lock, the remaining lifting wheel and recent art projects, it forms an important part of the local war heritage.
