On Wednesday 20 September 1944, a number of Shermans from the British tank unit thundered into the centre of Groesbeek. Coming from the Mooksebaan, they turned left into the Mooksestraat, where they attracted a lot of attention once they arrived in the centre.
That day, the Germans carried out heavy counterattacks along the entire front line, at three locations at the same time. The Americans in Mook, Beek and to a lesser extent in Groesbeek had a hard time of it.
Photo 1: A few people turned their faces away from the stinking plume of smoke coming from the engine of the tank. In the middle of the photo, a man with an armband is visible, undoubtedly a volunteer of the OD (OrdeDienst).
Photo 2: A few days earlier, at the same intersection, an exuberant Groesbeek crowd welcomed the paratroopers of the American 82nd Airborne Division who had just landed at the hamlet of De Kamp on the Wylerbaan.
