Champion CP

On September 17, 1944, during Operation Market Garden, American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division landed near Groesbeek. Around 13:06, the first paratroopers jumped from their planes. An hour later, at 13:50, gliders arrived with additional soldiers and equipment.

These landings took place in a specially designated area south of Groesbeek, which was called “Drop Zone N”. After landing, the American soldiers moved north through the woods.

Around 17:00, they set up their headquarters at a pre-selected location, approximately 1 kilometer west of the village of Groesbeek. That headquarters was codenamed “CHAMPION”. From that point, further operations in the area were directed.

This action was part of the Allied attempt to advance quickly towards Arnhem and Germany, by capturing important bridges. The area around Groesbeek was strategically important because it was situated on higher ground and provided a good overview of the area.
