The Whaler's Tunnel was built in 1837-38 to link the town of Fremantle with the the only jetty at the time. through the limestone cliffs that ringed the bay. It was likely completed by a detachment of sappers stationed in Fremantle although popular belief is that it was convict labour, prisoners held in the Jail on top of the cliff called the Round House. It fell into disrepair and by the late 1930's it was blocked off. During World War Two it was converted into and air-raid shelter.
