John Curtin (8th Jan 1885-5th Jul 1945) served as the 14th Australian Prime Minister from 7 October 1914 until his death on 5 July 1945. He placed Australian Forces under the command of General MacArthur and even, in defiance of Churchill, recalled troops destined for the Middle East to garrison Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea.
During the First World War he was leader of the successful 'No' campaign during the 1916 referendum of sending conscripted soldiers to serve abroad.
