Hitlerallee, Mooksebaan

The Mooksebaan is a road between Groesbeek and Mook, through a wooded area. During the German occupation (1940–1945), this road played a role in the German military infrastructure.

The nickname “Hitlerallee” originated among the local population during the occupation. There are a few reasons why this name was used:
Military function: The road was used by the German Wehrmacht, including for transport and supplies. German military vehicles regularly drove over it.
Connection to the 'Bommenbos': In the woods along the Mooksebaan, the Germans built a secret ammunition depot, the so-called “Bommenbos” (officially: Feldmunitionslager 15/VI). This depot was heavily camouflaged and was connected to the Mooksebaan.

Nazi influences: The nickname “Hitlerallee” was a sarcastic reference to how the Germans expanded their power and infrastructure. In Germany itself, many roads were named after Hitler at that time; the name was adopted ironically or mockingly for this route in Groesbeek.

Forced labor & occupation: There are indications that local workers were forced to work on this and other roads in the region, which contributed to the negative sentiment and therefore to the nickname.

After the liberation, the name “Hitlerallee” naturally fell into disuse. The road was given its old name back: Mooksebaan.
