Memorial Naval Combat Demolition Units
Memorial honoring members the Naval Combat Demolition Units, the forerunner of the U.S. Navy SEALs. These men went to beach to open sixteen 15-meter-wide corridors for landing. Unfortunately, the plans were not carried out as planned. Preliminary air and sea bombardment was ineffective, allowing many German guns to fire on the attack.By nightfall, thirteen of the planned sixteen openings were open. Of the 175 NCDU men who came ashore, 31 were killed and 60 were wounded.
