and was killed March 3rd 1901
in action at Lichtenberg South Africa
where he is buried.

Herbert John Monckton
eldest son of Herbert Monckton of this town,
who volunteered for active service with the
Johannesburg Mounted Rifles and National Scouts
during the war in South Africa and died of
enteric fever on the 4th February1902
in his 23rd year at Standerton, where he was buried."

who died Atgarrero, Somaliland on 13th Nov 1903
of Enteric fever contracted in the field, when serving in
The King's African Rifles with the Somaliland Field Force.
He also served with the Royal West Kent Regiment
in the South African Campaign 1899-1902,
taking part in the operations in the Wittenberg, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Cape Colony.
This tablet is dedicated by his brother officers
in appreciation of his devotion to duty
and as a tribute to his sterling qualities"

Royal West Kent Regiment
Eldest son of Colonel J.T. Marsh R.E.
who while in command of a force at Burmi, Northern
Nigeria, was killed in action on 27th July 1903
when gallantly leading his men ia an attack against
a stockade. he also served in the operations on
the Niger in 1897-98 including the expedition to
Illah and in the South African Campaign of 1899-1902
taking part in defence of Mafeking and afterwards
commanding the Protectorate Regt, in the operations
in the Transvaal, for these services he was three times
mentioned in despatches and promoted to Brevet Majority.

friends with whom he served in Mafeking."
