Shoreham Fort

Shoreham Fort, also known as Shoreham Redoubt was 'Palmerston' Fort was completed in 1857 to defend against possible invasion by Napoleon III, Shoreham Port had grown in importance over the years. It was first armed with six smooth bore 68 pounder cannons but later replaced with rifled guns on 64 and 80 pounder size and manned by 2 Officers, 1 Master Gunner and 35 other ranks.
The fort was manned by 1st Sussex Artillery Volunteers up to 1896, but at least one cannon was still in position in 1918.
During WW2 a battery of 6 inch guns was erected on the fort but only part of the footings survive.
