WW1 Trench Memorial

Shoreham, with its good road and rail links and port facilities, soon became a significant Army training camp after Kitchener's Army began to form after the outbreak of the WWI. Large tented camps were set up on the edge of town, soon to be replaced by hutted camps after the weather deteriorated. As part of the training, a trench complex was built on the chalk Downs and as a memorial, The Friends of Shoreham Fort have built a reconstruction.
There is a very informative information board alongside the trench explaining Shoreham's role in WW1.
