Belgian war graves 1st world war

In the old cemetery of Vaux-sous-Chèvremont, is in a family grave

HANQUET Emile, age 30, war volunteer, lieutenant in the 11th line regiment, died of illness (probably the Spanish Influenza) in the Porte de Gravelines military hospital at Calais (France) on 7 November 1918, 2 days before the armistice on 11 November ! after having served continuously at the front for 43 months.

His last feat was an attack with 3rd Company on German positions on 29 September 1918. That attack recently saw heavy losses on the Belgian side, numerous German soldiers captured and two guns, two machine guns and a mine thrower destroyed.

He was due to be promoted to captain, but did not live to see it. He was awarded “Officer in the 'Order of King Leopold' and the 'Cross of War'.

The grave is almost impossible to find. It is an old cemetery that is no longer maintained. Several grave monuments have collapsed, fallen over or are overgrown. See photo 2.
